Traditional Meets Prep Master Bedroom
Marianne and her husband recently moved into their beautiful, new custom-built home in Birmingham, Alabama. It was a blank slate (literally) and they were stuck on what to do in the master bedroom. He's a bit traditional, and she loves a little rustic - but yearns for some colorful preppy pops of color and pattern. Working with their existing bed and dresser, I designed a room that marries his traditional tastes with some preppy blues and pinks that Marianne was craving. Keeping the patterns relatively simple was the key to compromise.
The couple are also world travelers and wanted to incorporate some of their expeditions into the design scheme. I suggested hanging blue China plates (from England) over their bed, a vintage map of Europe framed in a grid, and a gallery wall of intimate street photographs and retro travel posters for the walls.
